Murray is right, and you do not have to be in sales to try it. I will take a look at the content of our NVMUG web site and see if the initial index page could be improved this way.

I almost said you don't have to be in marketing or sales, but aren't we all in marketing - trying to promote something - if only ot create good will for who we are and what we represent?

If the basic rules of advertising apply to any medium, here is an idea that can help you develop a web site that is actally read.
Create a headline for your website that identifies you and what you do.
People read 75 per cent of newspaper headlines but only 25 per cent of the rest of the message. The same principal applies to web sites.
David Ogilvy had his new copywriters create 100 headlines for a product they were advertising. Here is the formula that was followed to choose the right one:
Which one did best to offer a benefit or solve a problem?
If you follow the same formula, your're on your way to having your web site
well read and your information and/or products will receive a greater response.

Neil made excellent points about whether or not to proceed with a web site: What constitutes a business that can benefit. Should it be used for information purposes or
selling products. Among others, he gave two supermarket examples. They were Stew Leonard's and Dorothy Lane.

What makes those web sites work so well is that there is many years of branding behind them, The viewer is presold by their brick & mortar presence and reputation for product, taste, customer service, originality and reliability.

Creating a successful website without that kind of background is challenging but not impossible. Visiting websites of same businesses could start the process...by really comparing and deciding what works for you.

And keep up with the good advice from Neil and Janis!
